It is a small cozy casa that serves delicious homemade food without all the frills of the EXPENSIVE dining establishments. It is by far our favorite Mexican restaurant in the Coachella Valley!
LA TABLITA
La Tablita is one of those restaurants that you stumble upon by accident, but then end up returning to time after time. The tortillas are soft and delicious made daily and the refried beans (my favorite) are home-style NOT canned.Their fresh guacamole and salsa are spiced just hot enough for great flavor but won’t make you break out in a sweat.One of the best parts about a visit to La Tablita is that you can add a yummy Margarita to your meal for only $4.00. These are REALhand-poured margaritas, not some slurpee out of a bucket. Service is excellent and the waitresses are always quick to get you a basket of hot and crispy nacho chips. The owner works the floor but still manages to make you feel like a guest in his house. Over all the food is fresh, flavorful, and very reasonably priced.
El Mirasol
When El Mirasol opened in the mid-1980s, it was a tiny hole-in-the-wall where chef Felipe Castaneda quickly won a local following. Because of its popularity, the restaurant expanded, doubling its size and party atmosphere. Try favorites like Castaneda’s authentic versions of Mexican standards such as chile verde, shrimp pipian and polo en mole poblano, the restaurant’s top seller. The very traditional chicharron, crispy pork rinds in a tomatillo sauce, can’t be matched anywhere in the valley. Plenty of heart-healthy dishes, including some vegan options like the tasty spinach enchiladas, are also available. Ask about specials that aren’t on the regular menu at this after-hours favorite for local chefs. In particular, don’t miss the crab enchiladas if they’re on offer; they are subject to seasonal availability. Usually there’s no waiting at lunchtime or for dinner on weeknights; the wait time on weekends is definitely worth it!
