Legendary Smokey Robinson Comes to The McCallum Theatre
8 pm
Given his legendary status in pop culture and his personable nature, it’s no surprise that Smokey Robinson is still recording quality music as he celebrates 50 years in the music industry.
William “Smokey” Robinson, Jr. was born and raised in Detroit, picking up the name “Smokey Joe” as a child because of his love for cowboy movies. In 1955, Smokey founded a vocal group called The Five Chimes. The group was renamed The Matadors in 1957 and began touring Detroit venues. In 1958, Smokey met Berry Gordy who co-wrote a single for them. The group renamed itself The Miracles and issued singles for several different labels. Smokey then suggested that Berry start a label of his own and in 1959, Berry founded Tamla Records which he soon reincorporated as Motown. The Miracles were one of the first groups signed by Motown and, with their first #1 hit “Shop Around” in 1960, also gave Motown its first million-selling single. The Miracles scored more than two dozen hits at Motown, including the classics “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “I Second That Emotion,” “The Tracks of My Tears,” and “The Tears of a Clown.”
